I am always struck by the omnipresence of stone in England. Stone houses, stone walls, stone bridges, stone embankments: stone, stone everywhere. It is a land of stone. The people grow older and disappear but the stone remains. New people are born but the stone is the same.
When I was younger, I felt oppressed by the unchanging, never-ending, boring stone landscape. Today I allow it has its charm. Certainly there is much to be said for tradition and durable construction.
